Auterra includes thousands of generic and enhanced DTC definitions within the software (e.g. a P1234 code could have a definition of  "Oil pressure too low fault"). Generic definitions are common to all 1996 and later vehicles. Enhanced definitions are specific to a vehicle make. If your vehicle manufacturer is not listed below, the scan tool will work fine since the Generic database has all the industry standardized generic definitions.

FCA, the parent company of Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep branded cars, has a new version of its Uconnect infotainment system that will support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Along with the new features, announced at CES today, FCA promised faster start-up times and capacitive touchscreens that yield better response times.

Many current Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge models can be had with the Uconnect 8.4 Nav system, which uses an 8.4-inch touchscreen to give drivers access to hands-free phone calls, digital audio and navigation. In addition, the Uconnect system includes a data connection powering online destination search.

The new version, according to FCA, will feature hardware upgrades resulting in better response and processing. The addition of a capacitive touchscreen also allows support for Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. With these features, iPhone and Android phone users can plug their smartphones into the car, making use of their phone's navigation, texting and other apps, through voice and touch commands.

In a move that's puzzled industry insiders, Toyota has decided to shun Apple and Google in its next-generation navigation and in-car entertainment systems, opting instead to go with the interface from little-known company Telenav. 

Other major automakers, including General Motors Company [NYSE:GM] and Volkswagen, AG have embraced incorporating Apple's CarPlay , and Google's Android Auto into their infotainment systems. But Toyota has been hesitant to cede its dashboards to either system. Its stance rejects the march toward uniformity occurring in the industry, and essentially, the notion that a new F-150, Malibu, or GTI can all provide the same infotainment experience. 

Even if the Telenav's maps, phone, and music integration is light years better than the competition—and there's no indication it is—the system will be different than the familiar smart phone-derived interfaces. And in the finicky technology industry, "different" can effectively mean "worse."
