With those words, our highly anticipated comparison between the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 and the Nissan GT-R NISMO , our April 2015 cover story, took a serious turn. On paper, the Z06 should’ve schooled the NISMO. In the real world, it didn’t, and that was the biggest factor in tipping the test toward the NISMO (the Z06 from that comparison is shown here)

It certainly didn’t seem right to us, and we said so. The Z06 has power, weight, grip, and braking advantages, but it was 1.4 seconds slower around Willow Springs International Raceway’s “Big Track.” Because the Z06 was slower on the straights while being quicker mid-corner and braking later, we assumed the fault was in the Z06’s massive aerodynamic package. As best we could figure based on the data we had, excessive drag from all the downforce the aero kit was making had to be the reason the Z06 was slower.

The real reason the Z06 was slower was because Chevrolet gave us a car with the rear suspension out of alignment. It was supposed to be running 0 degrees of rear caster. Instead, it was running positive 2 degrees. This made the rear dampers less effective at controlling the rear suspension and as a result made it more difficult for the Z06 to put power down. This is exactly what Randy Pobst complained about during our test.

Let’s take a look at how these three brutes—good for a combined 1,795 horsepower—stack up subjectively. The Corvette is the least race-car car here, not just in terms of looks but also in terms of everyday livability. It’s the one you’ll want for a long road trip. “Stepping between the ACR and Z06 is a lesson in the importance of ergonomics,” Jason Cammisa says. “The Chevy feels as though it was actually engineered around the human body, and as such it’s an absolute pleasure to drive. The ‘Vette works with you to be smooth, comfortable, and fast, whereas the Viper’s interior does everything to make you not trust the car, yourself, or anyone around you.”

In terms of instrumented testing, well, the results are not what you’re expecting. See, American cars are supposed to be quick in a straight line, and Europeans are supposed to be the ones that can go around corners. Or at least that’s what that British television show trained everyone to think. In reality, the little German with quite a bit less power (500 hp for the GT3 RS, 645 and 650 hp, respectively, for the Viper and Z06) and wads less torque (338 lb-ft versus 600 for the Dodge , 650 for the Chevy ) was the king of the drag strip. The Porsche hit 60 mph in 3.0 blazing seconds before igniting the quarter mile in 11.1 seconds at 125.0 mph.

The figure-eight results are as follows: 22.9 seconds for the Porsche, 22.6 for the Viper, and 22.3 for the Corvette. For all these tests the Viper was in Street mode. (Dodge also gave us another ACR set up in Track mode—different compression and rebound settings for the dampers, a larger front splitter, a larger rear diffuser, and a different angle on the wing. That one, a blue Viper not pictured, ran a 22.3-second figure eight.)

Would be nice to see those fender flares as an option for the up coming ZR2 and that forward lightbar also. Hope GM just doesnt tease and actually offer what they show.
