Volvo’s rival to premium compact hatchbacks like the Audi A3 Sportback and Mercedes-Benz A-Class, the V40 , isn’t offered in the United States though that is set to change with the next-generation model. However, a new V40 isn’t due for a couple of years still so in the meantime the current model has received an update.

The current V40 made its debut back in 2012 though its mechanicals are based on those found in the much older C30 . Nevertheless, the V40 with its handsome design and more practical five-door body has proven to be a hit. In fact, it’s Volvo’s second most popular model.

For its update, the V40, as well as the car’s V40 Cross Country soft-roader cousin, gets a few visual tweaks, greater distinction between trim levels, and a few new tech features. The latter includes an updated version of the Volvo On Call app which allows you to remotely access and control certain vehicle features using a mobile device.

With help from parent company Geely, Volvo is ready to fight Mercedes-Benz , BMW , and Audi with a lineup of luxury vehicles that look spectacular and still offer the safety technology consumers expect of the brand. Volvo’s lineup not only includes great sedans and wagons, but also SUVs and the S60 and V60 performance cars.

Least Expensive : The Volvo S60 is the Swedish manufacturer’s entry-level luxury sports sedan. With all the safety and security Volvo is known for, the S60 starts under $35,000.

Sportiest : An upgraded suspension, forged wheels, a brilliant all-wheel drive system, and around 350 horsepower all provide the Volvo S60 Polestar and V60 Polestar with more sporting credentials than your average Volvo.

The Volvo S60 is being labelled as the sexiest and naughtiest new mid-sizer on the market. But is it really? It has just picked up International Sedan of the Year Award, and its range spreads from a fuel-efficient D5 turbodiesel to a full-blown turbocharged all-wheel drive T6 petrol. It all sounds like the makings of an elegant, intelligent sedan.

Even though the Ford-Volvo marriage has been officially annulled, the Volvo S60 is based on Ford's EUCD platform (underpinning the current Ford Mondeo). On top of the already well-received Ford Mondeo base, Volvo has implemented a variety of new technologies and Norse finesse to the platform, including big leaps forward in pedestrian safety, a suave interior decor and splashes of contemporary yet cool design.

Our test car is the top of the range T6 with the R-Design package. The R-Design pack ($4200 option) includes a sharp new bodykit including a low chin spoiler on the front (so sharp it will scrub out on driveways if you're not careful), a piano black grille with an 'R-Design' badge, and a racy rear diffuser setup at the back. There's also a subtle boot lip spoiler and dark-accented 17-inch alloys to top it off. It looks great and reminds you - and onlookers - that this is not your average boring person's Volvo.

The executive suggests a performance edition will likely arrive next year, though the Model S will still be king of acceleration.

The agency will not push for a recall, as the door latches themselves continue to work properly despite an apparent glitch with the electrical sensors.

Volvo ’s big reveal at the Geneva Motor Show  is an all-new, second-generation XC60 SUV  – a new five-seat 4x4 which sits underneath the large XC90 in the firm’s SUV line-up. It shares its platform and much of its styling with its bigger sibling, but Volvo has also worked in some individual character into the XC60 , and is keen to pitch it as more than just an XC90  on a smaller scale.

It's part of an SUV blitz by the Swedish marque. Following the release of the XC60, an even smaller XC40 is set to follow which will be based heavily on Volvo's 40.1 Concept .

At the recent Geneva Motor Show Volvo’s vice-president of design, Thomas Ingenlath, told us, “I am relaxed coming out with the XC60, because it isn’t such a revolution [as the XC90 was]. But it is a big step and improvement with the new platform. I’m tempted to ask: ‘What could go wrong?’”
